COASTAL PROMISE is a four-day full immersion simulation offered by the Forage Center for Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Education, Inc. designed to build capacity for working in complex emergencies where humanitarian and peacebuilding responses are required.
During the exercise, attendees role-play as members of a non-governmental organization (NGO) responding to a crisis in a fictional country. Participants are required to engage in negotiations with combatants, government officials, and civilians; respond to the needs of internally displaced persons; evaluate and assess the needs of communities impacted by conflict and disaster; work as a team; plan strategically and operationally; and advance the objectives of international humanitarian law and their NGO. The Forage Center holds two simulations per year: one in Florida (to be held in March 2019) and one in Maryland. The upcoming Maryland event will be held in Swanton (Garrett County), Maryland. Students need to have a bachelor’s degree (any field) to apply (but can get waived from this requirement in some instances). The event will be held September 20-23, 2018.
